The Evidence is Here…

The Amazon.com fight to keep prices down on their new books is really starting to show. The second publisher, Hachette (and Macmillan) has joined the raise in prices… At first, I wasn’t much affected because the books I was looking to read were not ones that saw price increases… until today.

Since Christmas, I’ve read 4 books on my Kindle at $9.99 each… If I continue that pace throughout the rest of the year, I would have spent $240… Not bad… Now I’ll be spending up to $360 if I continue the same pace… At a college student’s budget… It’s pressing!

It is also interesting to me how Amazon’s price situation compares to the Wal-Mart story. Wal-Mart is known for lowest everyday prices, and to achieve this, they demand a certain price from the manufacturer. They can do this because if the manufacturer doesn’t sell to Wal-Mart, they might not stay in business. Anyway, Wal-Mart has the lowest prices… Amazon has the lowest price [in eBooks]… Amazon appears to have no control over their prices… Wal-Mart does have control? Hm..
